This is one of the many, gorgeous heritage cottages Oatlands is famous for! It sits on a large allotment of approx. 1295m2 and the elevated position offers views over the village. It was built in 1835 by Charles Newman when he was Granted the land on receiving his Ticket-of-Leave. He was transported to Van Dieman’s Land at the age of 20 for stealing a coat and an umbrella.
Charles continued his ‘adventures’ here by associating with Bushrangers and was even charged with kidnapping; however, he ended up marrying the lady in question! Upon receiving his freedom, he began acquiring large areas of land and started a carting business from Hobart to Launceston with his Bullock Team.
Constructed from rendered convict brick, the house could be transformed into a stunning residence filled with character and offers 3 double bedrooms; a cosy lounge with wood heater; the kitchen and a dining area overlook the backyard; and a combined bathroom / laundry.
